LEARNit

LEARNit: Lifestyle Enriching Activities for Research in Neuroscience, intervention trial

There are currently no clear methods for improving brain health.

The goal of this study is to examine the relationship between physical or mental activity and brain health.

This is a non-drug, behavioral clinical trial, funded by the National Institute of Health.

What does our study involve?

Eligible participants will participate in a 6-month, at-home, healthy living program involving either physical or mental activity. Participants will visit USC’s Health Sciences Campus to complete physical testing, brain scans (MRI and PET), cognitive testing, blood draw, and questionnaires. Potential volunteers include individuals 55-80 years of age who are able to walk without assistance and are willing to complete three study visits (about 10 hours over two separate days) at USC’s Health Sciences Campus over a 12-month period.

There are no charges for the study procedures, at-home visits, or materials. Participants receive monetary compensation for their time.

Who might be eligible?

Eligibility criteria include but are not limited to:

  • Age 55-80 years
  • Able to walk without assistance
  • Fluent in English
  • Ability to complete both fMRI and PET scans
  • Physical ability to safely participate in either program
  • Willingness to participate in either program

Unfortunately, if you meet any of the following criteria, you are not eligible to participate in this study:

  • Have a diagnosis of any other neurological or psychological condition
  • Suffer from a drug or alcohol addiction
  • Have a history of concussion, loss of consciousness, or other brain injury
